Have you heard about Veganuary? It runs throughout January each year, with more and more people taking part and trying a vegan lifestyle for the month.

But what does that actually mean? Is it just about food or is there more to think about?

We’ve got your questions answered, as well as information about our vegan skincare which might be helpful if you’re taking part in Veganuary.

What actually is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a non-profit organisation that encourages people worldwide to try vegan for January and beyond. It all started back in 2014, and during the 2020 campaign more than 400,000 people took their pledge to try a vegan diet.

At the same time, more than 600 brands, restaurants, and supermarkets promoted the campaign, and launched more than 1200 new vegan products and menus in the UK market alone.

Throughout the year, Veganuary encourages and supports people and businesses alike to move to a plant-based diet as a way of protecting the environment, preventing animal suffering, and improving the health of millions of people.

What does it mean to be vegan?

The Vegan Society was established way back in 1944. They define veganism as “a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.”

Their website explains that in practical terms “there are many ways to embrace vegan living. Yet one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey – as well as avoiding animal-derived materials, products tested on animals and places that use animals for entertainment.”

Is Veganuary only about food?

The Veganuary campaign is mostly focused on food, as for many people it is a supported starting point into trying a vegan lifestyle.

As we can see from the information above, embracing a vegan life comes in many shapes and forms – for some people, it’s only about what they eat. For others, careful consideration is given to products they use in other areas of their lives too, such as cosmetics and clothes.

Whether you’re thinking about trying Veganuary for the first time, or have been a vegan for a while, the main thing is to work out what parts of a vegan lifestyle are important to you and what being vegan means for you, so you can make conscious choices every day.

Why do you make vegan skincare?

The simple answer is ‘because we can!’. There are so many wonderful plant and mineral-based ingredients available that we don’t need to use ingredients derived from animals to create beautiful, soothing products.

As we’ve seen, if you’re thinking about Veganuary, you can decide if you want to just adopt a vegan diet, or if you want to try making other vegan product swaps too.

If you’re looking for a vegan moisturiser, vegan deodorant, vegan lip balm, vegan hand balm or face moisturiser, you can choose any of the products on our website with complete confidence that they’re 100% vegan.

Is vegan skincare good for you?

On the whole, vegan skincare products contain natural, organic ingredients that tend to be more gentle on the skin, and are often more easily absorbed for improved hydration and healing.

If you find you have sensitive skin, or are particularly allergy-prone, you may find that buying vegan skincare products is really helpful as they tend to have fewer ingredients, which are less likely to irritate the skin.

Beyond the body, making vegan lifestyle choices is a great way to help the planet as it offers a more sustainable, eco-friendly way of life. Animal agriculture is a significant global contributor to climate change, in areas such as deforestation and greenhouse gas production, so by reducing the demand we can all help to reduce our impact.

Why do people do Veganuary?

According to the Veganuary website, participants in Veganuary 2020 gave the following reasons for taking part…

  • 38% of people said it was for health reasons
  • 37% of people participated to reduce the exploitation and cruelty towards animals
  • 18% of people were taking part to reduce their environmental impact
