Scence Co-Founders

Getting your facial skincare routine right does so much more than just make our skin feel better – for many of us it gives us the confidence to get out there and get on with whatever life throws at us.

Our vegan Face Balms are carefully crafted to deliver deep nourishing and healing ingredients to your face so you’ll feel moisturised, soothed and confident in your skin.

Read on to find out more about our plant-based ingredients, and why we have chosen them for our Face Balms.

Mango Butter

Brilliant for combating dry skin, dermatitis and eczema, which can easily flare up in the colder months, mango butter is a really wonderful ingredient that we use a lot.

It comes from the seed kernel of the mango, and is packed full of Vitamin A, Vitamin E, antioxidants and essential fatty acids which soothe, heal and moisturise.

Rosehip Oil

Pressed from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant, rosehip oil (aka rosehip seed oil) has been used for hundreds of years to nourish and heal the skin.

We love it in our vegan face moisturisers because it’s got lots of fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acid, which help to plump and strengthen cell walls, so they can retain lots of water.

It also absorbs beautifully into the skin, and works as a brilliant carrier oil, so we know it carries all the good stuff into the deeper layers of skin to really have long-lasting benefits.

Organic Jojoba Oil

A lovely light oil which is incredibly moisturising and comes from the seed of the jojoba plant. Jojoba oil (which is pronounced “hoh” + “HOH” + “buh” if you’re unsure) hydrates the skin and balances sebum production, which is really important for skin health.

Jojoba oil has natural antibacterial properties, and naturally contains lots of healing and nourishing vitamin E. We use an organic jojoba oil, which has been certified by the Soil Association.

Illipe Butter

You’ll find the Illipe tree in the forests of Borneo. Another lovely nut butter that is incredibly moisturising, illipe butter helps the skin feel more supple and soothed, so you can wave farewell to that uncomfortable tight feeling that often comes with dry skin on the face.

Rice Bran Wax

Rice Bran Wax is a natural vegetable wax that’s solid and pale yellow. We melt it and mix it with all our lovely butters and oils, and it helps to hold our face balms together. It’s a by-product of rice bran oil production, so it’s great to use for sustainability.

Natural Vitamin E Oil

You will have seen Vitamin E mentioned as naturally occurring in several of our other face balm ingredients, but because it’s so good for the face, we include some extra too.

Vitamin E is not only wonderful when it comes to hydrating the skin, but it is also full of natural antioxidants, which help to smooth and firm the skin. Plus it helps to protect against UV radiation and pollutants – what a clever ingredient!

Beautiful essential oils

We currently have three different natural, plastic-free face moisturisers – Fresh Cedar, Perfect Rose and Pure.

The first two have a carefully chosen selection of essential oils, that not only smell beautiful but also do great things for the skin too.

The third, Pure, is essential oil free, so if you prefer products without essential oils, you won’t be left out.

What you won’t find – parabens

Parabens are a much-debated ingredient. A preservative that’s used in over 75% of skincare products, they keep bacteria growth at bay in products that contain water.

Although parabens are officially approved for use under the Cosmetics Directive (76/768/EEC), there have been several studies that question their safety. Denmark has also banned two types of parabens in products for children, due to these concerns.

The great news is, all our products are paraben-free. We don’t put any water in our products, so no need for preservatives that prevent bacteria growth.

So if you’re looking for a paraben-free face moisturiser, you can choose any of our face balms and have complete peace of mind that you won’t find any parabens in the pot.
