Understanding Zinc Sunscreen

Hurray! The sun is making it’s way back so I thought a short blog on how zinc sunscreen works would be really helpful in choosing the protection that works for you as protecting the skin from sun exposure is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. I will talk more about understanding  SPF and the chemical v mineral sunscreen question next month but, for now, this is a brief guide.

While many people are familiar with sunscreen, fewer understand the difference between mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. One of the most widely used mineral sunscreen ingredients is zinc oxide. Understanding how zinc sunscreen works can help you choose sun protection that suits your skin.

How Sunscreen Protects the Skin

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage the skin and accelerate signs of ageing. Long-term exposure also increases the risk of skin cancer so sunscreen helps protect the skin by preventing or reducing the amount of UV radiation that reaches the skin’s surface.

Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreens

There are two main types of sunscreen.

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat.

Mineral sunscreens, by contrast, use ingredients such as zinc oxide to create a protective barrier on the skin that reflects and scatters UV rays.

Why Zinc Oxide Is Popular

Zinc oxide is widely used in mineral sunscreens because it provides broad-spectrum protection, meaning it helps block both UVA and UVB radiation. It is also known for being relatively gentle on the skin, which makes it suitable for people with sensitive skin. This is why we champion this ingredient at Scence.

Benefits for Sensitive Skin

Because zinc oxide sits on the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed, it is less likely to cause irritation for many people. This is one reason mineral sunscreens are often recommended for children or individuals with sensitive skin.

Environmental Considerations

Some mineral sunscreens are also considered more environmentally friendly than certain chemical sunscreen ingredients. However, formulation and packaging choices still play an important role in determining overall sustainability.

The Scence Approach

At Scence we believe sun protection should be both effective and responsible. Our sunscreen formulations use zinc oxide for reliable mineral protection while remaining suitable for sensitive skin and combined with simple ingredients and plastic-free paper packaging, the goal is to create products that protect both people and the planet.
